Katie Ebzery shoots for Olympic dream after keeping Opals place for Rio event

KATIE Ebzery is excited about the chance to push her claims for a place at theRio Olympic Games after moving astep closer to her dream on Tuesday.

The 25-year-old was selected alongside three-time Olympian and fellow Novocastrian Suzy Batkovic in a 12-woman n squad to compete at the Rio Games test event next month.The Opals will play Brazil, Argentina andVenezuelaat the tournamentfrom January 15at Carioca Arena inBarra Olympic Park.

Selection caps a breakthrough year for Ebzery, who made her Opals debut in winsover New Zealand at the Oceania titles in Augustwhich secured ’s place at next year’s Olympics.

Ebzery came off the bench in both victories and has since helped Sydney Uni Flames rise to second on the WNBLladder with an 8-4 record.The guard has averaged the third most points in the leaguewith18.58 and is fourth in average assists with 4.67.

The absence of starssuch as Penny Taylor, Lauren Jackson and Liz Cambage for the Rio test event means the Opalssquad is all but certain to change for the Olympics.

Ebzery, though, was just pleased for the chance to push her claims.

“It wasn’t expected, and obviouslyI’m excited for the opportunity,” Ebzery said.

“I made my debut in the qualifiers this year and obviously just taking the steps to hopefully towards pushing for selection.

“But obviously it’s a very talented team and it’s going to be difficult to do, but getting these opportunities definitely helps.

“It’s still a while away and anything can happen between now and the Olympics. Players will come in after their overseas stints, so it’s just a matter of putting in some good performances and seeing if I can hold onto a spot.”

Cambage was again a notable omissionafter beingleft out of the Opals’ team for the Oceania titles forskipping a training camp to attend a music festival.
