Jets to clash with comets in grand final showdown

Raymond Terrace Jets and the East Cessnock Comets advanceto the grand final of the BCIB Big Bowls Challenge with impressive major semi-final victories. Matthew Baus led the way for the Jets in its 12.5-2.5 win over Maitland City. Baus defeated Darren Fogarty in straight sets 12-5, 12-8 in the singles. The trio of Jamie Minter, Shane Evans and Lennon Scott clinched the win downing George Niznik, Darren Kedwell and Jon Dimopoulos 10-5, 10-5. Ian Lean and Jason Stokes split the pairs with Rod Darcey and David Dilworth. East Cessnock whitewashed Charlestown winning the singles, pairs and triples rubbers. Leif Selby beat Beau Prideaux 14-3, 10-4; Paul Cousins and Brodie Turner accounted for Damian Robb and Bruce Jewell 8-5, 8-2 and Danny Mathieson, Chris Wilkinson and Simon Mitchell edged out Wayne Marsh, Jack Ryan and Terry Blow 9-7, 7-4. East Cessnock will host the grand final from 6pm on Friday.

AWARDS NIGHTOne of the highlights of the Newcastle bowling year is the Association Xmas/Presentation Night thisThursdayat Edgeworth Bowling Club. The Newcastle Bowler of the Year will be announced, with the main contenders being Raymond Terrace’s Matthew Baus, Jamie Minter, Lennon Scott and Jason Stokes plus Shannon Gittoes (Nelson Bay). The other awards to be announcedare the inaugural Senior Bowler of the Year, Encouragement Award, Junior Bowler of the Year and Coach of the Year.

JACKAROOS WINNatasha Scott (Raymond Terrace) has played a leading role in the n Jackaroos swag of gold, silver and bronze medals at the Asia Pacific Championships played in Christchurch. The n team returned home with four gold, two silver and two bronze medals. Scott skippered the Women’s fours and triples teams to a gold and silver medal. Carla Odgers, Kelsey Cottrell, Anne Johns and Scott combined brilliantly in the fours final defeating the USA team skippered by Myra Wood 28-7. Odgers, Johns and Scott lost a thrilling triples final by the odd shot 17-16 to Hazel Jaconoy, Ronalyn Greenlees and Rosita Bradborn (Philippines). The other gold medal winners were Aron Sherriff (Men’s singles); Karen Murphy (Women’s singles) and Cottrell and Murphy (Women’s pairs).

U-DESIGN FINALSValentine ladies performed best of the Newcastle clubs that contested the state finals of the U-Design Club Challenge played at Warilla last Saturday and Sunday. They won the Women’s Pink Division defeating Lithgow Workmen’s Women 2-1 in the semi-final and Cabramatta 2-1 in the final. The members of the successful side were Maree Vincent (singles), Di McCarthy and Anna Harris (pairs) and Jodie Turner, Chris Keane andChriss Gallagher (triples).

n representative Matthew Baus and Jason Stokes are members of the Raymond Terrace side to contest the BCIB Grand Final and contenders for the Newcastle Bowler of the Year.
