Brisbane takes top foreign investment strategy award

While Singapore took out the fDi Intelligence’s Asia-Pacific Cities of the Future award – with Sydney, in 10th place, the strongest performing n city – Brisbane’s efforts in attracting international investments earned praise from the publication.

The Queensland capital beat Hong Kong (second), Tokyo (third), Auckland (fifth), Sydney (sixth), Canberra (seventh), Perth (ninth) and Melbourne (10th) in its 2015-16 Foreign Direct Investment strategy category.

“Brisbane impressed the judging panel with its commitment to and flair for FDI attraction,” fDi Intelligence said.

“Brisbane Marketing, the city’s official agency for inward investment, devised Brisbane 2022 New World City Action Plan, a report highlighting seven key economic priorities and more than 100 recommendations to propel the city towards economic and urban success.

“As part of the plan, the city’s Asia-Pacific Headquarters Strategy places an importance on promoting Brisbane as a key destination for companies’ Asia headquarters.

“The Tourism Infrastructure and Hotel Investment Strategy puts a focus on attracting FDI that will bolster the tourism industry, targeting tourism and infrastructure projects such as cruise ship terminals and hotels.”

fDi Intelligence praised Brisbane Marketing’s role in working with prospective clients to find funding, networking and visitation opportunities and providing access to utilities.

“Brisbane is promoted via a range of online platforms and websites, while also optimising social media to stretch its reach effectively,” fDi Intelligence said.

“Its Weibo site, a social networking site in China, exclusively targets students, investors and bolsters the tourism sector, targeting the about 100 million Chinese tourists.”

Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said the award was recognition of the city’s international efforts.

“This ranking reinforces Brisbane’s attractiveness to companies as an investment destination and strengthens Brisbane’s influence as a serious player in the Asia Pacific region,” he said.

“As ‘s new world city, Brisbane is an emerging economic powerhouse and a gateway to the Asia-Pacific.

“As the closest n capital city on the eastern seaboard to Asia, Brisbane offers an attractive business environment in a region supporting an ever-increasing share of global economic growth.

“What the world is now seeing is a confident Brisbane – a powerhouse in the Asia Pacific region and a leading destination for business investment, exports, education, conventions, tourism and the arts.”

Brisbane was second in fDi Intelligence’s 2013-14 FDI rankings, behind Hong Kong.
