Last month Kye Smith posted a video he shot with the help of his colleagues at Eluminate, a Darby Street video production company,on the rooftop of the Great Northern Hotel in Hunter Street, Newcastle.

In the clip Smith plays a drumming chronology of every Beatles song ever recorded in just five minutes. Since then the footage has attracted more than 670,000 views on YouTube.

“I have been lucky to have a couple of videos go viral in the past,” Smith said referring to his Blink 182 drum chronology.

“I wasn’t sure if the concept would go well with this audience.”

Smith has covered other bands he loves in the same way –a five minute musical medley. But the other chronologies have covered his musical home turf –punk rock.

“I grew up with the Beatles playing at my grandparents,” Smith said.“I like the catchy, melodic hooks.”

Smith chose the city rooftop as a nod to the Beatles final public appearance which stopped London crowds as the band playedatop of Apple records headquarters.

And while shooting the clip was relatively straightforward, the Great Northern Hotel was more than happy to loan out their rooftop with its spectacular beach and harbour backdrop –pre-production took months.

After breaking his arm earlier this year Smith had six months off the kit.He used this time to plan the arrangements of the chronology so each song seamlessly glides into the next.

Smith is about to tour with Sydney’s Frenzal Rhomb and will perform again with his own band at the Station Hotel, Hamilton, on New Year’s Eve.
